Ask directly about previous fainting. Anyone with a history should be reclined before the procedure begins.
Techniques that work
Applied tension, distraction, slow breathing and honest, unhurried explanation reduce vasovagal events substantially.
If they faint
Stop, remove the needle, lay flat, elevate legs, protect the airway and document. Never let a patient walk out immediately after syncope.
