Phlebitis
Pain, erythema along the vein and a palpable cord. Remove the device, elevate, apply warmth and document. Escalate if there is systemic upset.
Infiltration and extravasation
Swelling, coolness and a slowed infusion. Stop immediately, aspirate where possible, elevate the limb and follow the vesicant protocol for the drug involved.
Vasovagal events
Lay the patient flat, elevate the legs, protect the airway and observe until fully recovered before discharge.
